Further Information for Kayaks

General Purpose and Recreational Kayaks
General purpose kayaks are suitable for a wide range of uses and locations. Whether it is pottering about at the beach, your local lake or canal or maybe exploring placid rivers you will find a kayak for you here. GP kayaks are usually designed for use on flat water or with the right experience on moving water upto grade 2.

They usually have an adjustable footrest to accommodate different sized people and are widely used in outdoor centres, schools, clubs, etc. Some models have open cockpits which may seat 1 or 2 people and give easier access.

When trying to choose a kayak please bear in mind what type of locations you will mostly be paddling in. Then bear in mind your build and body weight and the choice can be narrowed down quite easily. If you are not sure please e mail us for advice and you will receive a prompt reply from experienced canoeists with their reccomendations.

Touring and Sea Kayaks - Plastic
Touring and exploring our inland waterways is a great way to exercise and get outdoors. Touring kayaks are designed for flat water and gentle flowing rivers. They will have good straight line speed but less maneuverability than GP kayaks. A variety of sizes are available depending on where you will use it, how far you may travel, storage space available etc.

Sea Kayaks tend to be longer and have more storage capacity for carrying gear for extended trips. They are available in either fibre glass construction or plastic and may have watertight hatches, skegs, etc. Fibre glass kayaks are lighter and generally speaking higher performance than plastic and are higher in price.

Sea Kayaks - Composite
Composite Sea kayaks offer the ultimate in design and performance for the Se kayaking enthusiast. Boats in this category are proven designs with a model to suit most needs. They are constrcuted from fibreglass for a lighter stiffer hull than can be achieved with plastic. Custom orders are also available.

Two Person Kayaks GP and Touring
Paddling with a friend, partener or familky member is one of the greatest ways to enjoy paddling. The double kayaks in this section range from the general purpose open cockpit style for ease of use and stability through to 2 person sea touring kayaks.

All Round WW River Kayaks
Kayaks in this category are designed for white water river running with plenty of play potential. They will not play or perform to the same degree as park and play freestyle kayaks but are deisgned to help get you down the river and allow plenty of fun along the way. Some boats in this category (usually the longer models) also make good more advanced general purpose kayaks or ideal craft from which to instruct. There are also plenty of good designs at the mid price level of 400 to £500 which make them ideal as a first white water kayak.

Freestyle Park and Play Kayaks
Freestyle park and play kayaks are primarily designed for performing moves in holes, on waves and even flat water. Designs are evoloving quickly and in this area of the market new model are appearing all the time.

There are vgenerally speaking two types of playboat design at the moment. Ultra short, stubby designs with relatively high volume are designed for fast dynamic play moves including new school aeria moves. The slightly longer design of boat around typically have slicey ends for a more controlled vertical move, they also tend to be faster on a wave but may not perform aerial oves so easily.

Althouh we have call ed this category park and play some people can and will take their playboats on to river trips. Be sure you know your own and the boats limitiations before taking a playboat onto a river trip. Most peole will find most playboats easy enough to paddle on rivers but they are not deigned with speed, safety, volume etc. that are required for many rivers.

Creeking Boats
Creeking boats are designed primarily for tackling steep technichal white water runs. Boats in this category also make good forging river running designs for people looking for higher volume boats rather than all round river play. Deisgn features usually include short length, lots of rocker, more rounded hull dsign than all round river play boats and other built in safety features for operating in extreme locations.

They are designed to be manouverable, to resurface quickly after drops and be forgiving in nature due to the type of water they are likely to be used on.

Pool and Polo Kayaks
Clubs, centres, schools etc. may have access to a swimming pool which can be an ideal way to teach some of the skills in the sport and also to play canoe polo. There are a few models of kayak on the market specifically designed for pool use. These are not usually suitable for outdoor use due to thier lower specification.
