  ISLAND KAYAKS EXPEDITION from £1,099.00

Once in a while a sea kayak is designed that sets new standards that others will follow for years to come. The "Expedition" from Island Kayaks is a truly great all round sea kayak that includes some innovative and exciting design features that have had all who have paddled them and now own them singing their praises.

March 2005 sees the arrival of the new 2005 spec boats with some exciting improvements to the fittings. A new unique skew on a pull pull system, relocated skew control box, improved backrest and thigh grips amongst other improvements make the Expedition stand out from it's competitors. As a result we have some 04 spec models on offer at an amazing £1099.

In keeping with the traditional roots of modern sea kayaking the hull profile is closely based on that of a kayak from the Uummannaq Fjord area of west Greenland. The keel has been subtly modified to move the pivot point forward, enabling effective use of the adjustable skew, which replaces the built in skew of the Inuit craft. Forward speed is excellent but that does not mean in this case that turning ability is reduced. When tilted the Expedition carves an easy turn and feels extremely stable whatever degree of edge you use.

Crosswinds have very little effect and the initial stability means this is a kayak that will suit novice sea paddlers as well as satisfying the performance required by the seasoned experts.

The moderately Vee'd cross section makes for a sea kindly hull and the slightly fuller lines fore and aft combine increased carrying loads with a more comfortable ride compared to excessive plunging associated with very fine entries and exits.

Standard features on the Expedition include -

Large oval hatches fore and aft for easy loading and unloading and a day hatch with bulkhead located close behind the seat. The keyhole style cockpit with positive control thigh braces allow for easy entry and exit and the seat is fitted with a moulded foam backrest and padding. The seat itself cleverly forms the an angled bulkhead for the rear compartment allowing maximum storage capacity and easy emptying of the boat as every drop of water runs out with no areas for water to collect. Adjustable pedal footrest allow an easy customising of the boat.

The retractable skew is controlled by a hand slider located to the side of the cockpit rim allowing fine adjustment. The skew itself is offset from centre a feature which reduces the amount of sand and grit collected in the recess which is a common cause of skew jamming. This also allows more space in the rear compartment for storage.

Deck lines and elastics are standard and there are moulded recesses for a Silva 70 P Compass and Henderson Compact 50 pump if required. To continue this attention to detail the end handles are complimented by a moulded in finger grip on the underside of the hull at each end for secure handling off the water. There are also 2 stainless steel recessed bars with carrying straps supplied for easy transport.

The Sirius is a fast exploration kayak suitable for the intermediate to serious paddler requiring a hull that will be suitable for both coastal exploring and longer open sea crossings. The spirit of the Sirius can be traced back to one of modern sea kayaking's most famous designs. In the late 1970's P & H and Derek Hutchinson launched the Baidarka Explorer, based on Derek's first design of 1967 called the "North Sea" This proved to be a very successful partnership and the Baidarka was soon recognised as a landmark in modern sea kayak design,

In the early 1990's with the needs of the sea kayaking community changing P & H felt that the time for s design overhaul was becoming necessary and the difficult task of replacing such a classic kayak was started. The Sirius was designed with the finest attributes of the Baidarka in mind. The new kayak would have to be fast, of excellent stability for it's beam and be able to perform well in a variety of seas and weather conditions.

The Sirius comes fitted as standard with an excellent retractable skew system and comfortable adjustable seat. Other features include 2 large watertight hatches and one day hatch, adjustable footrest, backrest, deck lines and chart elastics. The following optional extras are also available.   P & H VELA £1,595.00
Click for Currency Coverter
If you are a smaller lighter paddler you may find that many sea kayaks on offer are just a little on the large side. The carry down to the water's edge is a struggle and once on the water you can at times feel more like a passenger than the master of your craft.

The Vela has been designed solely for the smaller, lighter paddler requiring a quick sea kayak with at least a reasonable degree of stability. With a beam of 54cm (21.25") it's in the width band of the faster kayaks and the innovative hard chined, light, convex hull provides the maximum possible stability for a kayak of this beam. Although quick the Vela is surprisingly stable and with a length of 4.77m (15' 8") the kayak is more manageable both on and off the water.

The Vela's hull is particularly complex and represents a major achievement for the designers. The kayak cuts the water cleanly due to it's narrowing of the volume at the bow. This transition in volume creates rigidity in the hull as well as styling that greatly increases the aesthetics of the kayak. Above the hull styling line, the bow has a gentle flare that helps prevent the kayak diving whilst in a following sea and also prevents the paddler getting wet in choppy conditions

The Vela comes fitted as standard with an excellent retractable skew system and comfortable adjustable seat. Other features include 2 large watertight hatches and one day hatch, adjustable footrest, backrest, deck lines and chart elastics. The following optional extras are also available. Rudder instead of skew, compac 50 Hand operated pump, keel reinforcing strip, foot pump, outside seam. Please email for us for prices and further info.
